Summertime Fun on a Budget ~ Money Saving Tips

I think summer may be at the top of most people's list of favorite seasons. Long summer days filled with endless opportunities for fun outside. Some of my fondest summer memories aren't extravagant holidays or expensive outdoor concert series, they are homegrown things reminiscent of simpler days.

As I reminisce about summer as a child of the 70s and 80s I'm taken back to swimming in the lake, fishing in the creek, and star gazing on my lawn.

These are a few of my favorite budget-friendly ideas for summer.

  • Picnic French Style - A wicker basket filled with fruits, cheeses, cured meats, baggets, and desserts, complete with a bottle of crisp white wine. Set the mood with vintage French music.

  • Drive-In Movie or Outdoor Movie - Nothing could be more nostalgic like a Drive-In movie theater (if you can find one near you). Creating an outdoor movie experience at home can be just as fun. All that is required is a pile of blankets and pillows or comfortable chairs and a computer. Include popcorn, rootbeer floats, and your favorite candy.

  • Farmers Market - They are filled with local entertainment and foods, and you might run into your neighbor making them a social event.

  • Outdoor Charcol Grill - Many state parks and city parks offer a picnic table with a metal grill for charcoal. Grill up your favorite summertime meal, at sunset the old-fashioned way.

  • Camping Without the Work - Reserve a campsite at a state or national park. Enjoy nature, play music by the campfire, and roast marshmallows. When night falls head home to your cozy bed (or set up your tent).

  • Events Near Me - Google event calendars in your hometown for free outdoor concerts, yoga on the lawn, and social events like BINGO and swing dancing.

  • Be a Tourist - Sometimes great activities are in our backyard. Acting as if you were visiting your local area or state, Google 'Top Things To Do in......' You might be surprised at how many things there are to see and do in your region.

  • Living History - Living history museums have the best activities during the summer months that may include reenactments from a period and hands-on crafts like basket weaving or leather working.

  • Water Sports - Rent a canoe, kayak paddle board, or raft and enjoy the cool water on a hot day.

  • Hit the Trail - Take a walk or hike in nature. Even a local park is worth exploring. Google 'trails near me' for ideas or download a hiking app AllTrails.
