These simple habits help me feel my best, happy, healthy and peaceful.
It can be challenging to add a new healthy habit to our lives. Healthy habits are a practice of self care. Taking daily steps to show self love.
I’ve been slowly integrating these healthy habits into my life over several years, implementing them one at a time.
For me, it’s much easier to stick with a new habit if I identify “why” I want to add this habit into my daily life.
With each new habit, I ask myself, “How do I hope to improve by adopting this habit?”
“What benefits will I receive by making this healthy choice?”
As I practice my new daily habit, I don’t beat myself up if I miss a day. I show compassion and understanding by recognizing I’m not perfect and am a work in progress. When I treat myself with kindness, I’m more likely to continue trying to add a new habit instead of feeling defeated.
If you add any of these habits into your daily routine, please honor where you are today and treat yourself with kindness & understanding.
Drink Water
Drink lukewarm water when I wake up. I’m slightly dehydrated after sleeping all night. Water helps wake me up, makes me feel energized, and decreases the puffiness in my face. Our bodies need water to function properly. Drinking water keeps my skin clear, and my skin soft.
MCT Oil and Lion’s Mane
I add MCT oil to my coffee. The healthy fat from coconut oil is good for brain and gut health. The fatty acids work as an anti-inflammatory in my body. I also add one teaspoon of lion’s mane mushroom, which is terrific for brain health. It also gives me energy so that I’m hungry in the morning, which helps with intermittent fasting.
Intermittent Fasting
I don’t eat for 16 hours and eat within an 8-hour window between 11:00 am - 7:00 pm.
I started intermittent fasting about a year ago when I learned it could help repair cells. After sustaining a Traumatic Brain Injury from a car accident, I needed all the help I could get to repair and regenerate brain cells.
I’ve noticed that I have mental clarity and higher energy while practicing intermittent fasting. I began intermittent fasting for my health, a pleasant surprise was I lost 20 lbs.
Whole Food Vitamins
Even though I try to eat primarily healthy whole foods, sometimes I feel like I’m not getting enough nutrients from my food. I began taking vitamins. I recently learned that many vitamins are manufactured from chemicals.
I noticed a massive difference in how I felt and my overall health when I switched to taking whole food vitamins. I take vitamin c, d3, zinc, omega 3, magnesium, and turmeric every day. I’m not a spokesman for these vitamins. These are honestly just the ones I have found to work well for me. I’ll leave an affiliate link below if you are curious about them.
Meditate
Meditating is the one habit that impacts my life the most. I have been meditating off and on for 25 years but daily for over three years. There has been a shift in my emotional well-being with my daily meditation practice.
I’m calmer, less frazzled, more empathetic, and more present. With each meditation, I feel as if I’m working towards becoming the kind of person I want to be.
Yoga
I began practicing yoga 25 years ago and became hooked. I’ve been doing it ever since. Yoga helps me live pain-free and recover from injuries and is an outlet for me to connect my mind, body, and spirit. I love how yoga makes me feel strong, agile, and graceful. I practice yoga daily at home. Depending on how much time I have, my yoga practice runs between 20 - 60 mins.
Limit Social Media
It’s easy to get lost in the internet void. I wasn’t raised with social media, but it didn’t take long until I reached for my phone to scroll through social media more and more often. When I usually would be content in the moment, like waiting for an appointment, walking, or eating. I would instead become bored, agitated, and want to be entertained by my phone. I wouldn’t say I liked how my phone addiction took me out of the moment. I wasn’t being present anymore and felt disconnected. Many Times I would compare myself with others and feel bad about myself.
By limiting my time on social media, I feel happier and more content. I am more present with the people and world around me.
Daily Walks
I spend so much of my time working on the computer. It is incredibly refreshing to unplug and go on a walk. It is a gift I give myself. Walking is an easily accessible way to move my body and get some exercise that is always accessible. I enjoy connecting to nature and noticing the world happening around me. No matter the weather, I always find time to go on a walk. If I have time on the weekend, I’ll go for a hike. Sometimes I’ll explore a new town if I’m on holiday. Many times I walk near my home.
No Screen Time Before Bed
I recently adopted a new nightly habit: no screen time before bed. Turning off the TV, computer, and Ipad at least 1 hour before bed helps my mind and body prepare for bed. The lights and sounds from technology stimulate the brain, making it difficult for me to fall asleep. Turning off the technology before bed allows my brain and body to unwind and prepare to sleep. Instead of screen time, I will read a book or knit. The new nighttime routine helps me relax and get a good night’s sleep, leaving me feeling rested the next day.
